Some questions to answer:

  • Does the toast close button look like an error?
  • Is it intuitive to download encrypted/protected images from DMs?
  • Drag and drop space icons discoverability
  • Should we hide "x left the group" and reports to keep people from feeling bad?

Hi @hodlbod , Tested these on desktop (Chrome, macOS) and mobile (iOS Safari). Here's what I found:

1. Toast close button

Desktop ("Copied to clipboard while copying invite link")

The circled ⊗ icon next to the success message reads more like an error/failure indicator than a dismiss button in my opinion. The toast says "Copied to clipboard!" but the icon next to it feels like it's saying the opposite.

On mobile, I noticed something worse while sending a message:

There's a "Cancel" link and a ⊗ button right next to each other. I genuinely wasn't sure that does "Cancel" stop the send and ⊗ close the toast? Or do they both do the same thing? I hesitated, which isn't great when you're mid-conversation. Replicated the same issue on Desktop as well.

Replacing the circled ⊗ with a simpler × or just letting toasts auto-dismiss (like Slack does) might clear this up?

2. Downloading images from DMs

I opened an image I sent myself in a DM and got this full-screen view:

Chat.png

There's no download or save button anywhere. On desktop, I had to right-click and save. On mobile, I had to long-press and hope for the best. Both work, but neither is obvious.

I also wasn't sure if the missing button was a bug or a deliberate privacy choice for encrypted DMs. I think a small note like "saving disabled for encrypted content" would make the intent clearer than the current silent absence.

3. Drag and drop space icons

I first tried dragging space icons in the sidebar on desktop, that just triggered the browser's native image drag instead of reordering:

I eventually found that you can drag and drop icons in chats but it took me a while to discover.

On mobile, the spaces view is a completely different layout with no reorder affordance at all:

Spaces.png

There's no way to reorder here. I was actively looking for this feature because this issue mentioned it, and I still couldn't make it work on either platform. A regular user won't find this.

Something like an edit mode or visible drag handles would probably go a long way here.

4. "X left the group" messages

They're styled the same as regular chat, so they take up real visual space. In a small community like this, "left the room" hits different than it would in a 10,000-person Discord. A few things stood out to me:

i. If three people leave a space with eight members, it feels like the place is dying.
ii. There's no way to tell if someone left on their own, got removed by a mod, or just lost connection.
iii. Join/leave messages from people exploring fills the chat with stuff that isn't conversation.

Collapsing these by default, or only showing them to admins might keep the room feeling healthier without losing the information entirely.

Happy to run these as structured tests with more users if that'd be useful.

Thanks! I think we can leave image downloads alone for now, for the others I've created #137 #138 and #140
